"A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Sofia: in training.
Otto: enjoying a wider world.

We are booked to go to Perth the week after next. Sofia and I flew quite a bit when she was little, but this is the first time I will be taking both kids by myself - eek! There are no direct flights so it will be at least six hours in transit and and a change in Melbourne. Sofia loves to listen to music and so I bought her some earphones this week in the hope that at least some plane time can be filled in this way. I will also be packing sticker books, interesting snacks, multiple episodes of Playschool and Peppa Pig on the iPad and probably some Rescue Remedy for me.

The park has become a different outing for Otto - no longer is he mostly confined to barracks in the Ergo or pram. This week I suited him up in some waterproof overalls and off he went.

A favourite from last week was four boys on the bed.

Sofia: budding gourmand or koala impersonator?
Otto: finding his feet.

Thursday was Sofia's 2.5 "birthday" so we marked the occasion with the unveiling of a play kitchen. I have been tossing around ideas for a DIY kitchen for a while now, but last month I admitted to myself that it wasn't going to happen any time soon and I ordered one. I am glad I did as it has been an instant hit with both the kids. Sofia has mostly been washing up(!) with a bit of cooking on the side. Otto has been using the kitchen to cruise and he loves to open and shut the oven/cupboard. This last week has been a bit rough with fevers and coughs all around (plus an ear infection for my littlest one) so the new addition has provided a welcome distraction.

A favourite from last week was this shadow shot.

Skink

We get quite a lot of little skinks in our garden over the summer. They're not as common over the winter - unless you happen to pick up a piece of firewood that has one hiding inside it. This is one that we found when we brought some wood inside. Thankfully it avoided being inadvertently cremated and was released into our garden to eat some more insects.
Metallic Skink
It is a metallic skink which is apparently the most common lizard in Tasmania.

Sofia: hanging with Barbara and 'berta.
Otto: keeping an eye on Roberta.

Sofia has had quite a lot to do with the chooks since we got them. She knows their names, likes to feed them kitchen scraps, collect the eggs from their house (she is more careful than she used to be) and sometimes she just likes to hang out with the girls while they peck around her. In this shot she was offering up some water for them to drink.

Otto on the other hand has had much less close experience as he is usually napping when we go and check for eggs or he is being carried on my hip way above chook height. Last week there was some glass between them, this week we took advantage of a beautiful sunny afternoon and Otto got amongst it.

A favourite from last week was this snuggle.
